"I have to process my grief, Orion.  I'm sorry to lay this on you." It's what I'm here for, John-boy. Tell me," my old friend said. "Z was a teacher and a soul mate. She taught me about acceptance. She had suffered three horrible seizures. In her last few minutes when she was blind and unable to stand, she smiled when she felt Priscilla and me with her.  She was at peace in our arms. When I am at life's end, I want that kind of acceptance and peace. She seemed to be saying, 'hey, I have no regrets. I'm glad you're here with me.'"

  2. In life, when ZZ felt bad, she'd lay her head on my chest and be comforted by the sound of my heart. So in her last minutes, I put her head against my heart one last time. I could feel her spirit shift into peace. I could feel her say "I'm ready now." And then I was ready to let her go, knowing she would always be with me. A spirit guide as loyal as ZZ isn't likely to let death keep her from her self-appointed guardianship.
